On May 22, Jason Keith Smith, 30, from Lincoln Park, Mich. was sentenced to 14 months in prison for making bomb threats against San Benito High School in 2012.

Personnel from the Hollister Police Department and San Benito High School were present in the United States District Court in San Jose to offer testimony in the sentencing of Smith. Their statements offered insight to be considered by the judge during sentencing in the case.

In a press release by the United Stated Department of Justice, United States Attorney Melinda Haag and Federal Bureau of Investigation Special Agent in Charge David J. Johnson announced that Smith received 14 months in prison for making multiple telephone bomb threats to San Benito High School, which resulted in it being locked down during a “Code Red” drill for hours.

Smith was charged in an indictment filed on Feb. 19, 2014. He has been in federal custody since Oct. 6, 2014. The sentence was handed down by U.S. District Judge Lucy H. Hoh. Judge Koh also sentenced Smith to serve a three-year period of supervised release with special conditions, including that he not telephone San Benito High School or possess any computer without permission from his probation officer.

The case was prosecuted by Northern District of California Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph Fazioli and Eastern District of Michigan Assistant U.S. Attorney Kevin Mulcahy, with the assistance of Laurie Worthen. The prosecution is the result of an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Northern California and Detroit, the Hollister Police Department, and the Lincoln Park Police Department.

In a press release, the Hollister Police Department said it “would like to thank everyone involved in the investigation from its inception until this sentencing. We would especially like to thank our federal investigators and prosecutors for their dedication and hard work to bring this event to a conclusion,”
