Martha Hill Metzger

DATE OF DEATH:Saturday, June 04, 2016AGE:

Martha Hill (Becker) Metzger, a resident of Hollister, passed away on May 15, 2016. She was born in California to Louis and Mary Hill on May 11, 1948. Growing up in Santa Ana, Martha was the youngest of three children and always had a love of adventure, coupled with a true artistic talent. Martha’s talent was natural, and she always gave God the credit for it.

After graduating from Santa Ana High School, she sang and performed with her band, “Martha Hill and The In Sounds”. In 1968, Martha entertained thousands of troops in Vietnam and Thailand with actor Peter Leeds in the first USO tour to follow Bob Hope into the war zone.

Martha sang professionally with many bands performing in Orange County, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Salt Lake City, Park City, and Lake Tahoe. She sang with the Bob Jung Big Band, as well as touring with Brazilian jazz legend Walter Wanderley and his group, along with many other accomplishments.

After meeting Raymond Becker (US Army) in Japan while on the USO tour, they married and eventually settled in Riverside, California where they raised their family until moving to San Juan Bautista, California in 2005.

There, Martha continued her professional singing in surrounding communities, events and fund raisers and became a parishioner at St. Stephens’s Church in Gilroy. Following the death of her husband Raymond, Martha moved to Hollister and continued her artistic career in the area.

In 2010, Martha met and subsequently married William Metzger, who also loved her very much. Continuing to explore her many talents and interests, she expanded her professional interests by becoming an accomplished photographer/videographer, creative songwriter and began her writing career. By 2016 she had copyrighted over 50 original songs, some of which she published on YouTube and shared when singing in public. Also, she began writing GoGo Boots on the Ground, a blog/book about her experiences in Vietnam. Ever the adventurer, she kept up on the technology of her craft and was never daunted by learning a new set of computer tools if it would improve her artistic performance.

Through all her journeys, she was always a loving and supportive person, going out of her way to help others. She became a court appointed volunteer for National Court Appointed Special Advocate Association (CASA), for the support of abused or neglected children and agonized over what the children experienced. In addition to being drawn to the beauty of the mountains, the ocean, and her flowers, she loved her dogs. She also loved to sing in the private recording studio in her home, allowing her to create and record her many new artistic inspirations. Singing would allow her to relax and it was seldom that she missed an evening at her keyboard. She never met a stranger and loved all of her friends and neighbors. She was a treasure, a blessing in the life of everyone close to her and will be deeply missed. Martha is survived by her loving husband William (of Hollister), her daughter Jennifer Talley, son Matthew Becker and grandson Julian Becker (all of Riverside, California), her brother Paul Hill (of Seal Beach), and her many nieces, nephews and cousins. She is preceded in death by her brother David and her parents Louis and Mary.

We lost her too soon but have comfort knowing that she is in a wonderful place.
