On July 27, 2025, at approximately 2:57 a.m., Hollister police officers responded to the 400 block of Verona Place after a resident witnessed suspicious activity involving a parked vehicle. The resident observed a man appearing to be breaking into the vehicle, which was then driven a short distance down the street. Recognizing the potential theft, the resident followed the suspect at a safe distance and then notified police.

Officers Provost and Officer Baugher arrived and located the suspect inside the vehicle. Officers contacted the suspect and quickly determined the vehicle had been recently stolen. Bags containing burglary tools were also in the car.

In addition, officers noticed a second vehicle parked in front of the stolen car.  The car was registered out of Sunnyvale, California. Officers reached out to Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety to request contact with the registered owner of that car.  Sunnyvale officers confirmed the car was an unreported stolen vehicle.

The suspect, identified as 24-year-old Joseph Moreno of San Jose, was taken into custody without incident. Further investigation led to the recovery of additional burglary tools thought to be associated with Moreno.

The suspect was transported to the San Benito County Jail and for the alleged crimes of vehicle theft, carrying a concealed dirk or dagger, possession of burglary tools and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The investigation is continuing and there appears to be others involved.  Anyone with additional information related to this case is encouraged to contact the Hollister Police Department at (831) 636-4330.
