Supervisor Dom Zanger
San Benito County Board of Supervisors
481 Fourth Street
Hollister, CA 95023
Dear Supervisor Zanger,
I am writing to express my deep concern regarding your public comments referring to the recall effort of Ignacio Velasquez as a “scam” and labeling the canvassers involved as “liars.” As a constituent, I find these statements deeply troubling and inconsistent with the level of professionalism and integrity expected from an elected official.
Regardless of anyone’s stance on the recall itself, residents have the right to participate in the democratic process without being publicly disparaged by their own representative. Using such language to describe community members—many of whom are volunteering their time to engage civically—creates division, discourages public participation, and reflects poorly on the office you hold.
Your position carries significant influence, and with that influence comes a responsibility to engage respectfully, even when you disagree with the actions or opinions of others. Dismissing a citizen-led process with derogatory terms undermines trust in local government and signals a disregard for the people you are meant to represent.
I respectfully urge you to reconsider both the tone and content of your public remarks, and to demonstrate a greater commitment to integrity, respect, and professionalism moving forward. Our community deserves leadership that listens, communicates responsibly, and upholds the principles of democratic participation.
Sincerely,
Cindy L. Gillen
32-Year Resident
