After a particularly competitive season, the San Benito High School varsity soccer team continues to impress with their skills on the field.

In a recent game against Monterey High school the boys added another win with the final score of 5-3.

“The game against Monterey was a clear example as to why our league is so competitive. We scored twice and right after Monterey scored two before the end of the first half. Then we were able to score one more and Monterey scored right after. It was back and forward,” said varsity head coach Marco Orozco.

“When I thought we were going to tie, late substitute Abraham Hernandez scored a really nice goal with about 15 minutes left to play to give us the lead. Thankfully, Abraham Arevalo was able to score his second of the game to give us a more comfortable lead and thus the final score of 5-3,” he added.

Goal scorers included Edgar Barbosa (1), Abraham Arevalo (2), Manuel Ceja (1), and Abraham Hernandez (1).

The team has made tremendous strides this season. Their overall record to date is 9-2-8 and 6-1-4 in league play.

“Every game in our league is very intense, my players have been working really hard this season, physically and most importantly mentally. I am lucky to have a team that is full of talent and is always looking to play as a team,” Orozco said.

The Haybalers are set to take on Watsonville High School on Thursday, Feb 15 at 3:30 p.m. in Hollister.

Photographer Elliot Ruiz captured images from the game.  Ruiz is participating in BenitoLink’s Junior Journalism Project, which is partially funded by a grant from United Way of San Benito County.
