As the Hollister and San Benito County communities change, the local YMCA is also changing.
Starting Monday, June 5, the YMCA of San Benito County will open at 5 a.m., Monday througyh Friday. This is a change from the current 6 a.m. opening time.
The 5 a.m. opening time represents new summer hours. This schedule will be re-evaluated in the fall.
“What we’re hearing is that our people are struggling to fit everything in to their busy mornings,” said Mayra Zendejas, senior membership director at the YMCA of San Benito County. “To come in for your workout at 6 a.m., go home and shower, and get on the road with the traffic … it wasn’t working.”
In addition to an earlier opening time for members to use the Y’s new weight and cardio equipment, it is also developing early-morning group exercise classes.
“We will be offering classes at 5 a.m.,” Zendejas said. “We are gathering interest and are in the process of hiring someone.”
The YMCA of San Benito County is the largest provider of child care in the Central Coast YMCA Association, serving hundreds of local kids year-round through Summer Day Camp and after-school programs. However, Zendejas said the YMCA of San Benito County, located in Hollister, wants the community to know this Y is here for all.
“We really hope this (early opening time) will unite the whole family,” Zendejas said.
