The San Benito Saddle Horse Show and Rodeo has been around for nearly a century. For generations, some families have gathered and created a tradition of competing together.

Cody and Katie Skow, for example, have participated in the rodeo with their kids Gracie, Josie, and Averie for years. This year they won the best working outfit as a family.

Individually, the girls participate in their own way.

Gracie, 20, former Miss San Benito Rodeo, competes in several roping events including a couple alongside her dad. This year they took on mixed ribbon roping and family mix team roping.

Josie, 18, grew up riding and being around the rodeo and when she picked up a camera for the first time, she knew what she wanted to shoot. She’s been getting action shots and capturing glimpses into the traditional cowboy life with her work ever since.

Averie, 14, took home the Junior Best Girls Working Outfit prize this year featuring pieces from some of her older sister’s former rodeo queen outfits. She hopes to compete in the coming years with some training from her older sister and dad.

The BenitoLink Internship Program is a paid, skill-building program that prepares local youth for a professional career. This program is supported by Monterey Peninsula Foundation AT&T Golf Tour and Taylor Farms.
