This year, why not give yourself something special? The feeling that accompanies a gift to your community is priceless and you can do so while building a better community by supporting the annual “12 Days of Giving” holiday campaign. Now in its seventh year, 12 Days is a community-wide, concerted effort to support nonprofit organizations providing essential services to San Benito County residents. Together, CASA of San Benito County, Chamberlain’s Children Center, Community FoodBank of San Benito, Emmaus House and Sun Street Centers collaborate in what is emerging as a local holiday tradition, and one that can leverage your generosity through matches provided by sponsoring organizations.
12 Days of Giving this year takes place from Dec. 1-12. During that time, any monetary donation made to any of these organizations will be matched in part by a pool of funds provided by local organizations and businesses (list below).
Consider Community FoodBank of San Benito. In less than three decades it has grown into an operation that shares healthy, nutritious food to thousands of local residents each month. Since purchasing and reworking its operations center at 1133 San Felipe Road last year, Community FoodBank has emerged as a model for food banks across the state.
Every Friday and Saturday, people arrive to shop at the food bank's marketplace, a bright, airy space that features fresh food. Music plays. People visit. Children do the things children do.
Often, there are food and nutrition demonstrations or other special events. For instance, Community FoodBank hosted a free flu vaccination clinic on Nov. 16.
But the weekly marketplace is only part of the story. Every week, volunteers and members of the food bank’s small staff bring the solution to the need, addressing hunger for the homebound and seniors, for school kids, and to the communities of Aromas, San Juan Bautista, and Tres Pinos. Other nonprofit organizations addressing hunger and nutrition shop at Community FoodBank each week to nourish the people they serve.
A well nourished community is a healthy community. Children learn better. Preventable diseases are reduced. And we can all understand the feeling that is derived from sharing a flavorful, nutritious meal together.
It only happens with the daily support of local farmers, grocers and producers, and with the thousands of hours of volunteer assistance the food bank counts on each year.
