The YMCA of San Benito County held its second annual Career Day at Santana Ranch School for about 150 children in elementary and middle school.

Groups of children rotated between classes to talk with two professionals in the community.

Representing the journalism field, this reporter was paired with Keith Severson, director of marketing and community involvement for Graniterock.

Other professionals who participated in the two-hour event represented the public health, law, and law enforcement sectors. A total of eight professionals participated in the July 26 event.

“We host this career day to highlight the vital but often overlooked jobs that happen behind the scenes, showing kids the diverse opportunities available to them,” said Samantha Diaz, program coordinator for YMCA of San Benito County.

Children asked the professionals if they liked their career; what is the best part of the job; how long they’ve been working; and if they were to choose another career, what would it be.

Severson provided some children with sponge-like granite and cone toys. He also provided coloring books filled with various trucks Graniterock utilizes.

Following the event, the children were treated to a swim day at Hollister High School’s Baler Pool.
