Actions are being taken to change the quality of water on the San Benito High School campus because of the odor and condition. The faucet quality has been complained about by multiple students at San Benito High School, including sophomore, Julio Salazar, who first brought the issue up.
Salazar said that students “deserve better.” The “smelly” and “funny tasting” water is not sanitary, he said. He brought up the complaint at a LULAC Adult meeting, which was also attended by SBHS Principal Todd Dearden and Superintendant John Perales. LULAC, the League of United Latin American Citizens, is an organization that participates in community service and raises funds for scholarships.
An immediate action taken by the school was to provide water bottles until the faucets could be fixed. Water jugs were placed around the school, and signs preventing the use of certain fountains were put up. Some students said jugs quickly run out of water and were not filled up often. This proved to be a dilemma for athletes who relied on the water andno longer had it available to them, particularly on days when the temperature exceeded 80 degrees.
Sophomore Marisa Villegas said, “It plays a huge role, because sometimes I or someone else forgets a water or runs out and it is convenient” having access to water from a fountain.
Salazar acknowledged that the administration is taking steps toward providing cleaner and healthier water by providing an immediate response to the water quality complaints.
