There are approximately 2,870 universities in the United States, not including junior college. So, of course it can be difficult to find that one dream school.

Two years ago, a survey was sent out to San Benito High School teachers asking what colleges they attended or which they would want featured as the college of the week. This year, careers are included as well.

Jay Ehret, the school’s career specialist, works in the Career Center which provides college information, financial aid, scholarships and more. Originally, the colleges and careers of the week were chosen either by teachers or personal choice. Now, officials see where students apply or have been talking about.

“We have a rotation of colleges that go CSU, UC, private, and out of state,” Ehret said. “In the beginning, we were running out of private and out of state schools but now the rotation helps make sure we have an even spread of schools.” “This week,” Ehret mentioned recently, “is the University of Nevada, Reno. And next week’s career will be petroleum engineering,” which involves drilling for oil, managing the drill, and choosing where to drill. “I look for careers with the most growth potential over the years and the highest earnings.”

The University of Nevada specializes in veterinarian care and agriculture-oriented classes. “I chose this college because of student buzz,” Ehret said. “Many kids applied last year, are applying to it this year, and have been talking about it. I’m doing the research you should be doing for colleges.”

Students can stop by the Career Center for more information on colleges and careers of the week, or go online to the San Benito High School website and click “Career Center” under the Academics tab.
