A tradition for many local families in October is to visit Swank Farms on San Felipe Road near the Hollister Airport. In the back, behind all the attractions, is the haunted maze. This maze has been there for years but recently has been operated by Sally Hail, with the help of many others.

“This year,” Hail commented, “is a continuation of last year. I want people to walk through and not only be scared but to see a story. I want to take them out of their real life and into this world of aliens where they can forget about their life for awhile.” It takes roughly 20 minutes to walk through in groups of five. Guests can expect aliens, special effects, eerie music, and a whole lot more.

Hail works to make sure every detail is starting in August after her theatre camp. “I get my inspiration from sitting down and thinking of one thing and letting my mind go on a journey. I research certain roles that are actually true stories and events and weaving them together,” said Hail.

Evan Rosales, 13, has been acting in the haunt for two years. “My favorite thing about working in the haunt is the time when you’re able to scare people that think they’re all tough and they jump back and run,” he said.

Hail said she hopes to completely change the theme next year. This year’s Haunt dates continue on Hallowee, Oct. 31, and Nov.1, from 7:30 p.m. to midnight. A trip through the haunted maze costs $15 per person and people can message Hail on her Facebook page for the haunt, which is called "Sheerterror LLC." For more information on the Maze call 637-4704.
