Author of Exit Strategy, Julie Finigan Morris, spoke about her book to an audience at the Carl Martin Luck Memorial Library in San Juan Bautista on Wednesday, July 26.

Morris’s imagination and her elaboration of events that took place in 2006, led to the former newspaper reporter and founding board member of BenitoLink to pen her first novel based in the fictional town of Las Flores and centered on a nationwide E-Coli outbreak. Morris set the story in 2008 to coincide with the housing and financial crisis and bring to light the financial struggles of agricultural workers.

Morris, who runs Morris Grassfed Beef with her husband, Joe, explained her decision to write the story by telling the gathering at the library, “When I saw so many people working so hard, and yet they were invisible to most, this was the story I wanted to tell.”

One of the characters in the book, Stella, was one of the main reasons Morris wanted to write this book. Stella, an immigrant working on the wash lines while trying to raise her daughter, experienced turbulent times. Her inner strength gave her the ability to fight for what she believed was right for herself and her daughter.

“Stella had the strength to walk away with dignity intact,” Morris said, expressing her passion for the characters in her novel and sharing how strength, encouragement, hope and love can bring people out of extremely difficult times.

Exit Strategy is available online through Amazon, Barnes & Noble, AuthorHouse and various independent bookstores.
