Abundance Shared: Annual Food Drive Continues

Yearly food and fund drive allows the Community Food Bank to serve thousands of people each month

Already, local residents have donated more than 10,000 pounds of food to Community Food Bank’s annual Food and Fund Drive.  The effort continues for another week, until the end of the year at drop locations throughout the area (See the list at the end of the story.)

During the first week of November, barrels marked with Food Bank’s logo went out to locations from Aromas to Tres Pinos.  With schools closing for Christmas break, many barrels are back, but the effort continues.

“The community’s generosity is overwhelming,” said Maria Lynn Thomas, Community Food Bank’s chief executive officer. “Most important, it comes at just the right time.  The flood of shelf-stable food at this time allows us to continue to serve thousands of people each month through the cold season, when the supply of fresh produce goes down.”

Large donations have come through the efforts of local Boy and Girl Scouts, San Benito County Four-H, the Top Hatters Motorcycle Club, church groups, schools, businesses and government offices.  Some businesses promote their own efforts with giveaways or interdepartmental competitions.

“It’s great to see the reception we get when we deliver a Food Bank barrel to a new location,” said the Food Bank’s Mark Paxton.  “I have yet to hear anyone say, ‘what do we do with that?’  Instead, what we consistently hear from people is that they’re excited to participate and to have the opportunity to help their neighbors.”

With two weeks left in the campaign, there’s ample time to help out. To arrange for a barrel delivery either this year or for next year’s campaign, call Community Food Bank at 831-637-0340.
