Annual food bank food, fund drive begins

Approximately 200 barrels will be located throughout the county for food donations

Barrels are rolling out the doors this week for Community Food Bank’s annual Food and Fund Drive. Some 200 barrels will be at supermarkets, schools, banks and businesses throughout the county through the holidays, giving everyone an easy opportunity to make a difference in the community.

Anyone who wants to play host to a barrel can arrange delivery by calling the Food Bank at 637-0340. Contributions can be made through the Food Bank’s Web site at Community Food Bank http://www.communityfoodbankofsbc.org, or by mailing a check to Community Food Bank, 1133 San Felipe Road, Hollister, CA 95023.

Food Bank CEO Maria Thomas noted that it takes just $12 a month to supply a local student with a “backpack bag” every Friday. The bags offer nutritious food to carry children through weekends, when school nutrition programs are closed.

Last year’s campaign yielded more than nine tons of food, which comes at a critical time. Throughout much of the year, the Food Bank receives most of its contributions in the form of fresh produce from growers throughout the region. During winter months, the supply of fruits and vegetables slows significantly, and contributions received during the Food and Fund drive help bridge the gap. Some 5,000 people rely on Community Food Bank each month.

The barrels are easy to spot: each is wrapped with a bright Community Food Bank logo, and in a few short days, most of them will be brimming with food!

I've been at this most of my life, and it still fascinates and challenges me. San Benito County can be a cruel mistress at times, but we can share in our love for her, even with all her quirks.
