On Tuesday, Feb. 28, spay and neuter coupons will be available at the Hollister Police Animal Care and Services shelter between the hours of noon and 5 p.m.

On the last Tuesday of every February, World Spay Day shines a spotlight on the power of affordable, accessible spay/neuter to save the lives of companion animals, community (feral and stray) cats, and street dogs who might otherwise be put down in shelters or killed on the street. The 23rd annual World Spay Day is Feb. 28.

To help inspire pet owners to take personal responsibility for preventing unwanted puppies and kittens, the Hollister Police Animal Care and Services will offer spay and neuter certificates valued at $75 off any spay or neuter beginning on the 28th. Certificates are limited, so don’t hesitate.

"When you consider that two unaltered cats and their offspring can produce 420,000 cats, and two unaltered dogs and their offspring can produce 67,000 dogs in just six years, there is simply no reason not to spay or neuter," Animal Care and Services said in a press release. "These staggering numbers cost cities and counties thousands of dollars each year, and more than 5 million animals are euthanized in the United States alone.

To obtain a spay/neuter coupon, stop by the Animal Care and Services located at 1331 South St. in Hollister on Feb. 28 or for more information contact the Hollister Police Animal Care and Services Department at (831) 636-4320
