On Aug. 12, hundreds of people could be seen walking the streets of San Juan Bautista pulling wagons full of purchased goods or laughing with friends at the 54th Annual Antique Fair put on by the Rotary Club.
Booths at the event ranged from antique furniture to vintage toys and jewelry. Handmade crafts and art pieces were also for sale.
Lucas Morris-Lopez, who grew up in San Juan Bautista and currently works at Lolla, his sister’s cafe, said that while other fairs in town have become more “watered down” over the years, the Antique Fair reminds him more of events he experienced while growing up in town.
“This one in part is important because it brings a lot of people into the town,” Morris-Lopez said. “It brings crafts and antiques in, which is nice because it brings character.”
For people who were not raised in San Juan Bautista, part of the appeal of coming to the fair includes the atmosphere of the town itself.
“I have been doing this fair for almost 25 years,” said Liliya Yunerman, who had a booth selling goods from her store Liliana International. “I like the atmosphere. It is very relaxed and there are nice people in San Juan Bautista. There is also a nice mixture of arts and crafts.”
Debbie King was another attendee from outside the area who had visited before. She came to Sunday’s fair with family members from King City after being invited to attend by her sister.
“We love the variety and the friendliness of everybody,” she said. “It’s like that every time.”
