Aromas Grange Hall

On Sunday Jan. 28 the Aromas Progressive Action League will be hosting a panel discussion on local journalism, at 4 p.m. at the Aromas Grange Hall on the corner of Rose and Bardue in Aromas.

The event, Local Democracy Dies in Darkness, will take a look at the effects of the changing journalistic landscape and “how once robust community-based papers that covered local politics and events with the same zeal as their big city colleagues now find themselves scrambling for the resources to keep the doors open.”

The discussion will be moderated by Wayne Norton, who worked as a reporter and editor at newspapers in Hollister, Gilroy and Morgan Hill, and serves as a member of the Aromas Progressive Action League steering committee.

Panelist include:

  • Julie Reynolds Martinez, co-founder of the non-profit news site Voices of Monterey Bay. She served 14 years as a criminal justice reporter of the Center for Investigative Reporting and then at the Monterey Herald.
  • Jack Foley is a veteran journalist who is currently a Senior Editor at BenitoLink. Foley was a member of the San Jose Mercury News staff that won a Pulitzer for its coverage of the Loma Prieta earthquake.
  • Mark Paxton, former editor and publisher of the Hollister Free Lance and the Pinnacle newspaper, led staffs that won numerous awards from the California News Publishers Association.
