Community Vision San Benito County Listening Session Exhibit

On Sept. 26, BenitoLink hosted a photography exhibit opening at San Benito County Arts Council’s Art Depot, showcasing portraits that introduce and honor the county residents who participated in BenitoLink’s 2023-24 Community Vision San Benito County Listening Sessions.

More than 250 residents took part in the 2023-24 listening session project, sharing their fears, opinions and hopes for our community.

“After the sessions, we went back and wanted to meet folks in their own setting and photograph them in a location or environment that best represented them in their ‘real life,’” BenitoLink Executive Director Leslie David said. “There are so many residents who care and are willing to put time into solving our community problems and improving everyone’s quality of life. It is really encouraging that that spirit is still part of San Benito.”

Photographers Jessica Parga and Camille Mattish, both BenitoLink interns, captured the listening session participants’ character through the lens.

“People’s backgrounds vary, but you still may notice that hopes for this community’s future have a recognizable overlap,” Parga said.

“I am really proud of the work Jessica and Camille have done,” David said. “They learned a lot and did a beautiful job of capturing the personalities of our session attendees.”

Short biographies and quotes representing many varied professions and backgrounds accompany the photos, adding depth to the study.

Eat Art Exhibit

The San Benito County Arts Council is hosting its Eat Art Exhibition, an artistic expression of culture and food, starting on Oct. 11 with an opening reception from noon to 3 p.m.

“Creating art access points for our community through collaborative projects is pivotal for the San Benito County Arts Council,” Arts Council Operations and Development Specialist Kat Soza said. “Presenting the BenitoLink listening session exhibition concurrently with our EAT exhibition has opened our space up to community members who might not traditionally attend our events and hopefully encourage them to interact more with our local art scene.”

BenitoLink thanks the Community Foundation for San Benito County and the Calhoun and Christiano Family fund for supporting and funding this important project.

BenitoLink also thanks the San Benito County Arts Council for the collaboration of both galleries. To read the full Community Vision San Benito County report, click here.
