Comedians Angel Castro, Trent Babb and Colton Irvine entertained over 90 people at The Brass Tap’s Family Comedy Night on Feb. 20. Manager Chrisha Chrispens said she discovered the performers while researching Central California venues to bring talent to Hollister.

Babb, who was the headliner, said he had been a serious singer-songwriter for 15 years until one day when he realized no one liked his music. At the same time, he said, a comedy boom was happening, so he wanted to see what it would be like to be on the stage.

“I tried it,” Babb said, “and it’s awesome. With music, to get a response from a crowd, you have to play a whole song, and then they clap. With comedy, you tell a quick joke, and you get an immediate response.”

Babb quoted Joe Rogan as once saying, “Comedy is like building a mountain one layer of paint at a time,” and that becoming successful “takes forever.”

“It’s not a sprint, it’s a marathon,” Babb said. “A sprint is short and quick, and a marathon is slow and steady, but you just get better and better.”

He said the secret to making people laugh is humility. “I know I look like Ellen DeGeneres on ‘To Catch a Predator,’ but that’s what it is, humility, making fun of yourself for the most part.”

“You say what happened some time when you were embarrassed,” he said, “or you say what people tell you that you look like. No one wants to call themselves ugly, but that’s a comedian’s job.”

For comedian Angel Castro, comedy was not his first choice either. He said he was pursuing a different career when he realized he hated it. He said he realized the only thing that gave him joy was comedy. He said comedy is not for everyone, but he enjoys putting himself out there and connecting with people who like him and his work.

“I’ve been doing comedy for seven years now,” Castro said. “I feel like it brings me joy and that I can bring some joy to other people.”

Irvine said he enjoys the combination of performing, writing and making people laugh.

“I love going to different shows,” he said, “and going to different towns, meeting different people, continuing to hone the craft, and writing things about my life.”

Customer Christine Avina said she heard about the show through an Instagram post and brought her best friend, Michelle Bigelow.

“We have been to comedy shows before,” Avina said. “Two at Leal’s Winery and one in Salinas at the Fox Theater. This is something different in Hollister.”
