CalFire launches app to alert homeowners of wildfire danger

Free cell phone app includes safety checklist, notifications and fire map

As summer, and summer heat approaches, the San Benito County Sheriff's Office wants locals to begin thinking about fire safety. This is especially important with the Fourth of July holiday rapidly approaching, officials said in a press release.

Locals can get prepared with the new CalFire application that includes wildfire preparation checklist items so your family can be ready to go when wildfire strikes.

Features include checklists with steps for:

  • taking charge of your defensible space
  • hardening your home
  • preparing for bark beetles
  • creating an evacuation and family communication plan
  • assembling an emergency supply kit
  • evacuating early

The app features customized wildfire texts or push notifications and allows users to get alerts when a wildfire is reported in their chosen ZIP code or within 30 miles of you. It also features a fire incidents page so users can stay updated about current wildfires, including  size and containment percentage.

The app has a fire map, with a map of all current fires, along with a video library that features informational videos about wildfire preparation and prevention.

The San Benito County Sheriff's Office encourages county residents to download the app today for iPhone at the AppStore, and for Android at the Google Play Store.  It can be found at: http://www.readyforwildfire.org/Ready-for-Wildfire-App/.
