In his role on the governing body and policy-making body of the California Department of Education, State Board of Education President, Michael Kirst, visited both Gilroy and Hollister Prep Schools on March 27.
Kirst toured classrooms at both sites, learning first-hand about the Navigator model, talking with teachers and students, and having an opportunity to meet with members of both Gilroy Unified and Hollister School Districts, authorizers of the two charter schools.
Kevin Sved, CEO of Navigator Schools, highlighted the significance of the visit by stating “Being able to showcase the work of our staff and our students to the President of the State Board is special for many reasons. Not only does the state board directly oversee numerous charter schools, they also set the bar for state standards. As both GPS and HPS consistently exceed those standards, this visit allowed us to show Dr. Kirst how our students continue to perform at such high levels.”
Kirst was joined by Dr. Debbie Flores, Superintendent of Gilroy Unified School District, and board members Pat Midtgaard and Linda Piceno for the tour of GPS. Dr. Lisa Andrew, superintendent of Hollister School District participated in the tour at HPS.
The 11-member State Board of Education is California’s K-12 policy-making body for academic standards, curriculum, instructional materials, assessments and accountability.
