California Highway Patrol announced a Castroville woman died in a solo vehicle crash on Highway 156 near Monterey Road in San Juan Bautista. The driver was sent to Natividad Medical Center with moderate injuries.
It said though the incident is still under investigation, alcohol and/or drug use are suspected of being a factor in this collision. According to the news release form, the driver was arrested.
CHP said the preliminary investigation indicates that at around 1:55 p.m. on Feb. 6, the driver of a gold 2005 Honda Accord traveling eastbound on Hwy 156 west of Monterey Street was going 70 miles per hour in wet roadway conditions.
CHP said the driver stated he struck standing water in the roadway which caused him to lose control of the vehicle, which veered off the south road edge down an embankment and overturned, causing the passenger side of the vehicle to strike a tree.
It added the vehicle came to rest on its roof against the tree with major damage approximately 35 feet down the embankment.
The passenger, 25, sustained major blunt force injuries as the vehicle struck the tree and was pronounced dead on the scene by fire department personnel at 2:12 p.m.
CHP is asking if anyone has any additional information to contact Officer Mendonca from the Hollister-Gilroy Area CHP office at 408-427-0700.
