The San Benito County Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors and board members give back to the community in a variety of ways, including this month spending their first Tuesday of the month meeting packing over 750 weekend backpacks for the Community Food Bank of San Benito County.
These backpacks are given to elementary school students at several schools, who are in need of food for the weekend. Currently, more than 300 backpacks are given out each week, but the Ambassadors were told that number will increased to 500 soon because there is such a need in our community.
The next community project the Chamber Ambassadors will undertake is collecting new socks and toiletries for the patrons of the Community FoodBank. Mark Paxton, from the FoodBank, told Ambassadors that something as simple as a new, clean pair of socks or new toothbrush makes such a difference to many people they serve, Chamber CEO Juli Vieira said.
So during the month of February, socks, toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo, lotion and bars of soap will be collected. If you want to donate but do not have the time to shop, a donation box will be set up at the Chamber office for cash donations and the Ambassadors will take care of the shopping. The sock collection goal is 250 pairs, so if you are out shopping just pick up an extra pair, include a bar of soap or shampoo and drop them off at the San Benito County Chamber office at 243 Sixth St.
“Our Chamber Ambassadors want to become more involved in smaller projects throughout our community in 2017, said Vieira. "Instead of having a lunch meeting every month, our goal is to every other month participate in a community project.”
Any Chamber member can become an Ambassador, Vieira said, noting "we could not do everything we do in our community without our Ambassadors. They are an amazing group of people who give back to the Chamber and our community. Last year, the Ambassadors gave back over 600 volunteer hours to chamber events."
