City of Hollister's leaf-collecting machine, a large, vacuum-like contraption on a truck, will go out the day before street sweepers come through neighborhoods, City Manager William Avera announced at Tuesday's City Council meeting.

"We encourage people not to pile leaves up for the street sweeper," Avera said. "It doesn't help that much and it also hides debris that has done damage to sweepers in the past. If you have leaves, you can plance them in the general area right off the curb" the day before scheduled street sweeping and Community Services crews will likely suck them up with the leaf machine.

In other council business, Avera announced that striping crews over the last several weeks have added three miles of new bike lanes throughout the city so "cyclists have more room to maneuver around town."
