Jocelyn Vasquez, a 2014 San Benito High School graduate, is this year’s recipient of the Class of 1971 Scholarship. Representing the 1971 Haybalers, Gay Swartz Kelso announced the selection of Vasquez at the high school’s Scholarship Presentation Night in May. Vasquez was awarded a $2,000 scholarship to help her finance her studies at California State University, Sacramento in the fall. Vasquez plans to major in nutrition.
The Class of 1971 Scholarship was founded in 2007 by President Rudy Bermudes, Vice President Debbie Carrillo Villalon, and former Secretary Debbie Paura Overweser to help graduating seniors continue their education at a college, university, technical school, or vocational school. Since 2009, the Class of 1971 Scholarship has awarded a total of $12,000 to 10 graduating Haybalers.
Every year the Class of 1971 Scholarship holds a luncheon and silent auction for its primary annual fundraising event. This year, the fundraiser will be on Saturday, July 12  from noon to 4 p.m., at the Bolado Park Golf Club in Tres Pinos. A few of the items donated to the silent auction are condo lodging in Kauai, a cabin stay in Twain Harte, and a foursome for golf at the San Juan Oaks. A raffle will also be held.
The cost of tickets for the annual fundraiser is $25. To reserve space, contact Rudy Bermudes at rudyb50@hotmail.com. To prepay, contact Debbie Villalon at bcvgrammy@yahoo.com. Â
If you would like to donate items to either the silent auction or raffle, contact Toni Rovella at rovellat@ctt.com.
