Community Media Access Partnership (CMAP) has announced its roster of summer media courses for the summer starting at the end of June. CMAP is a nonprofit community center that has been helping people get in touch with their inner media skills since 2001. It provides access to various media tools and training to residents in Gilroy, Hollister, and San Juan Bautista.

CMAP Station Director Ian Slattery said, “We are helping the community members to thrive in the media world.”

The classes offered range from beginner level to advanced, including a GoPro Video Bootcamp, a Smartphone Video Workshop, and a Citizen Journalism Workshop.

“We are finding ways to sustainably serve in ways that are relevant,” said Slattery. CMAP is incorporating real-life community events into their lesson plans to give its course participants real, hands-on experience plus stimulation from the community. The Citizen Journalism Workshop is a two-session workshop held in Gilroy that is centered around the Gilroy Garlic Festival.  Students will learn the basics of citizen journalism and multimedia training and then have the opportunity to practice those skills at the garlic festival the following weekend.

“We want to hear from the people,” said Slattery. “We want to know what they want to learn.”

Classes are open to anyone with an interest in gaining new multimedia skills or sharpening their old ones and are also available to nonmembers. Most classes are free  but some require a small fee and potential registration for a placeholder. See the link for the list of classes below for more details, as well as, the link for membership information.
