If you saw more bicyclists on the road this week, it’s for a good reason. During the second week in May, the Council of San Benito County Governments (COG) kicks things into high gear for the 26th annual Bike Week celebration. Communities across the country celebrate Bike Week to give visibility to the importance of safer and improved streets, healthier habits, and less traffic — one community at a time.

On Thursday, May 12, COG also sponsored Bike to School Day festivities in collaboration with the Hollister School District. The events raise awareness of the need to create safer routes for bicycling and walking and emphasize the importance of issues such as increasing physical activity among children, safety, reducing traffic congestion and concern for the environment. The events build connections between families, schools and the broader community.

On Thursday, more than 400 San Benito County students participated in Bike to School Day. Students received a free breakfast snack and bicycle raffle sponsored by COG.

Bike to School events are taking place nationwide throughout the month of May.
