COMMENTARY: Self-awareness in a time of distraction

Samantha Slykas to host March 2 self-awareness event for all ages.

This Commentary was contributed by community member Samantha Slykas. The opinions expressed do not necessarily represent BenitoLink or other affiliated contributors.

My name is Samantha Slykas and I am 14 years of age. I am hosting a free self-awareness event for all ages at the Veterans Memorial Building this Saturday, March 2 from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

The topics I will cover include bullying, harassment, cyberbullying, stranger danger, personal space, self-defense, and a meet and greet with safety personnel in our community.

I am doing this event because I feel our self-awareness is at a low with all the technological distractions. Cell phones, video games and even having our earbuds in are distractions when we are walking, biking or handling a vehicle. I feel we all can benefit from this event by refreshing the importance of our surroundings and possible dangers that can occur.

I will have different organizations and companies attending to share safety information with the public. Guest speakers include the Bryan Stow Foundation and Community Solutions.

I will have skits performed so the message can reach the younger audience, and there will be tons of different activities and information.

I hope to see you there!
