Southern California is facing one of the most devastating wildfire seasons in recent history. Since Jan 7, the Palisades, Eaton, Hurst, Lidia and Kenneth wildfires have wreaked havoc across the region, destroying homes, displacing families and claiming lives. On Jan. 13 the Auto Fire began burning in Ventura County.

The Community Foundation for San Benito County sent a message to county residents via press release, pointing out that the wildfires have already caused unimaginable damage. “Entire neighborhoods have been reduced to ash and many families have lost everything they hold dear. Emergency responders and volunteers are working tirelessly but the road to recovery will be long and challenging.

“We know that many of you have already supported our community in countless ways, but we ask for your generous contribution once again to aid our neighbors to the south. Every donation, large or small, will make a difference and help bring relief to those who need it most.”

Nikita Vora Johnson, community relations manager for the Foundation, told BenitoLink that the organization makes a practice of rallying support in times when people elsewhere are in great need of help.

“We try to do this for all major disasters,” Johnson said. “We have a very generous community, and people were asking how they could help.”

Below are some of organizations accepting donations. Johnson said that all of these sites have been vetted.

“On behalf of those affected by these wildfires and the Community Foundation of San Benito County, we thank you for your continued generosity and kindness.” the press release said. “Together, we can help heal the wounds of this tragedy and support the recovery of the communities in Southern California.”

According to Cal Fire, the causes of ignition of the fires are under investigation, but the spread was aided by Santa Ana winds that reached hurricane speeds as the fires began to burn. There have been more than 20 fatalities and more than 12,000 structures have been destroyed. Exact numbers are still undetermined. Up to date California fire information can be found here.
