Congressman Jimmy Panetta to speak at San Benito Health Foundation ceremony

Changes to the facility include solar panels, LED lights and an ethanol-fueled generator.

Congressman Jimmy Panetta will attend the ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house at the San Benito Health Foundation for its newly-renovated, solar-powered health center, according to a recent press release. The ceremony is scheduled for Aug. 14 at 5 p.m. at the Health Foundation, located at 351 Felice Drive in Hollister.

The project is California’s first fully self-sufficient, sustainable, zero-carbon, renewably-powered healthcare facility, the press releases said.

Benjamin Eichert, director of Greenpower, told BenitoLink that the Health Foundation will be the second health care facility in the state to be off the grid, following Hayward’s Kaiser facility.

The San Benito Health Foundation began its process to become a green facility last year when Executive Director Rosa Vivian Fernandez consulted with Greenpower and the Aromas Progressive Action League during a Rotary Club of San Juan Bautista meeting.

The solar portion of the project cost about $2 million and is expected to save the Health Foundation $60,000 annually, according to Robert Hymes with Mynt Systems, overseer of the project.

Changes to the health facility include the installation of solar panels and a more efficient HVAC system, retrofitting all lights to LED lights and switching the generator from diesel to an ethanol-based fuel.
