Al De Vos, the junior varsity lacrosse coach and the county’s gang prevention officer, said he “never planned on becoming a lacrosse coach for this school, but one day I checked it out on a Saturday practice and the students called me ‘coach’. Next thing I knew I was the lacrosse coach.”

De Vos heard of the new program starting at San Benito High School and decided to check it out that weekend. He had never discovered his passion for lacrosse until he realized how interesting the sport was.

Along with the other coaches, Don Jones and Randy Brown, De Vos seems to get along with everyone.

Freshman Jason Lehman said that the whole team has accepted De Vos as a coach. “He is a good coach and knows many good tricks that help me on the field,” Lehman said. “He also spends time learning techniques to help us as a team.”

During the spring sports meeting, De Vos stated how he “works with kids for a living” and is enthused to be able to work with them now in a sports setting. Since lacrosse is a new sport at SBHS, De Vos said he is “extremely excited to be able to coach lacrosse for San Benito’s first time in history.” In the words of freshman, Zach Lawrence, “hopefully he coaches our team next year.”
