More than a decade after a previous version was adopted, the San Benito County Resource Management Agency recently released a draft Safety Element update, which is a section of the general plan.
The general plan is the long-term growth blueprint for the county, and the Safety Element is a specific section of the document, focused on climate readiness and environmental hazards.
According to San Benito County Senior Planner Stephanie Reck, the Safety Element update “is intended to identify existing and future natural and human-made hazards affecting unincorporated San Benito County.”
Reck added that the update focuses on reducing risks, improving emergency preparations, enhancing coordination among agencies and increasing community resilience through education and climate adaptation.
She also mentioned the county’s public outreach initiative, consisting of interviews that will be used to determine what the public prioritizes within environmental safety.
“Feedback from participants identified earthquakes, flooding, wildfires, utility/power outages, and evacuation concerns as some of the community’s highest priorities, which helped inform the update.” she said.
The current Safety Element was adopted in 2015, and the update process began with a series of public meetings last year.
The draft Safety Element is available at the county’s website until Aug 2. Residents can review the document and submit comments for consideration by the San Benito County Board of Supervisors.
