VITA volunteers

The end of the tax season is just around the corner and the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program is delighted to continue helping the community by providing tax preparation at zero cost.

Community Service & Workforce Development (CSWD) would like to invite you to help us reach our goal as we strive to have an increase in the number of taxpayers assisted compared to last year. As the tax season dwindles down to its final days, the days of VITA sites available to the public are counting down as well.

Originally, the last day for the VITA program was April 13, considering the end of the tax season is traditionally April 15.

Due to an extension presented by the IRS, the last day to file taxes without penalty for those who pay is now April 18. CSWD would like to invite those who find themselves still in need of filing taxes to come down to the VITA tax site. During this last week you can find a VITA site on April 11, 13 and 15 at the following locations:

  • Monday April 11, 2016 – CSWD, 1111 San Felipe Road, Suite 107, Hollister, CA
    • 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
    • 5:30-9 p.m.
  • Wednesday April 13, 2016
    • San Benito County Library from  9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
    • AJCC – 5:30-9 p.m.
  • Friday April 15, 2016 – CSWD, 111 San Felipe Road, Suite 107, Hollister
    • 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

For more information, call 211 or CSWD at 831-637-9293 and ask for Trino.

Earlier this season Lupe Arredondo expressed her gratitude by sharing her story, both as a volunteer of the VITA program and an individual taxpayer. “Through filing with the VITA program I was informed about the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and received a larger refund than I expected.  I walked away with what was entitled to me as a taxpayer.” What does mean for her and her family? It means she will have additional funds to ensure the well-being of her family by paying bills, investing in the family, or putting aside for a rainy day. This is the case for many of the residents of San Benito County that have taken advantage of the VITA program.

EITC is additional money given to qualifying taxpayers in form of a credit. CSWD encourages the public to become informed about EITC given by the federal government and now the state of California.

Not sure what a tax credit is, what the benefits of filing are, whether your required to file or not? Then stop by a VITA site before they close up shop for the season on Friday, April 15 and get all your questions answered.
