PRESS RELEASE #13-074

DUI CHECKPOINT TO BE HELD IN HOLLISTER AS PART OF THE AVOID THE 20 CAMPAIGN

HOLLISTER, CALIFORNIA – September 27, 2013– On September 28, 2013, The Hollister Police Department will conduct a DUI Checkpoint as part of the AVOID the 20 Campaign.

Avoid the 20, is a multi-jurisdictional anti-DUI campaign in Monterey and San Benito Counties. ā€œOfficers from Hollister, Salinas and the Hollister-Gilroy office of the California Highway Patrol will staff the checkpoint,ā€ said Sgt. Gerry Ross of the Salinas Police Department and the Campaign Coordinator.
The Hollister Police Department will conduct the DUI/Driver’s License Checkpoint on Saturday September 28, 2013 in the city limits of Hollister, in an effort to reduce the number of persons killed or injured in alcohol involved crashes. DUI checkpoints are conducted to identify offenders and get them off the street, as well as educate the public on the dangers of impaired driving.

Ā

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), checkpoints have provided the most effective documented results of any of the DUI enforcement strategies, while also yielding considerable cost savings of $6 for every $1 spent. Based on collision statistics and frequency of DUI arrests, DUI Checkpoints are placed in locations that have the greatest opportunity for achieving drunk and drugged driving deterrence. Locations are chosen with safety considerations for the officers and the public.

Ā

The AVOID the 20 Campaign is funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Remember, everyone is encouraged to help keep our roadways safe; Report Drunk Drivers – Call 911!
