Following an inquiry brought to the department’s attention by a candidate in the race, the San Benito County Elections Department is issuing a technical clarification regarding a minor clerical formatting omission on the ballots printed for the upcoming June 2, 2026, Statewide Direct Primary Election.
Upon receiving the candidate’s notification, election staff conducted an immediate review and noted that a template formatting omission occurred within the specific contest for the office of County Clerk-Recorder, resulting in the exclusion of a middle initial for one of the qualified candidates listed in the ballot.
The Election Department emphasizes to all residents that this clerical omission has zero impact on the validity, security, or processing of the election.
Under California Election Code and standard state administrative guidelines regarding “voter intent,” minor typographical or formatting discrepancies do not invalidate a ballot or alter the processing of votes. The candidates for this specific County contest are uniquely and clearly identified; all electronic scanning equipment and hand-verification processes will accurately capture and record every vote precisely as intended by the voter.
“Our primary directive is ensuring a transparent, secure and accurate voting process for every voter of San Benito County, and we appreciate members of the public and candidates engaging with our office to ensure absolute clarity,” said Chief Deputy Clerk-Recorder-Elections Ana De Castro Maquiz. “While this omission is strictly formatting-based, our office believes in proactive transparency. Voters can cast their ballots with total confidence that their votes will be counted exactly as marked.”
The Elections Department has adjusted its data proofing protocols, ensuring complete template conformity for all future election cycles.
