Fatal crash closes portion of Highway 25

Southbound from Highway 101 closed at Bloomfield Avenue, northbound closed at Shore Road. Re-opening expected around 4-5 p.m.

An early morning crash Oct. 15 on Highway 25 resulted in one fatality and partial closure of the thoroughfare.

According to the California Highway Patrol, around 7:30 a.m. a 2008 Kenworth truck was turning left onto northbound Highway 25 from a private driveway off the west shoulder. A 2002 Freightliner truck was traveling southbound on Highway 25 approaching the Kenworth. The Freightliner driver observed the Kenworth turning and applied the brakes, but couldn’t stop in time, the release said. The front of the Freightliner collided with the middle rear of the Kenworth’s trailer. The force of the collision caused the Kenworth to overturn and come to rest blocking both lanes of Highway 25.

CHP said that as a result of the collision, the Freightliner driver sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene by emergency personnel. The Kenworth driver sustained minor injuries and refused medical transport. The deceased has only been identified as a 49-year-old male from San Juan Bautista.

According to CHP, drugs and/or alcohol don’t appear to be factors in the collision.

Northbound Highway 25 at Shore Road and southbound at Bloomfield remain closed at this time due to an investigation. The portion of the highway is expected to open around 4-5 p.m., CHP said.

If anyone has information regarding this investigation, please contact CHP officer T. Tran of the Hollister/Gilroy CHP Office at (408) 848-2324.
