Community FoodBank of San Benito County is opening its doors to the public for tours and refreshments on Friday, May 18 from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m.

The celebration follows on the heels of purchase of its building at 1133 San Felipe Road, Hollister in 2016, and a comprehensive renovation and redesign of the building that was completed late last year.

Starting in November, Community FoodBank opened a choice market, in which customers select their own groceries at stations scattered throughout the marketplace. The typical food bank model is to place customers in a line at which groceries are dispensed.

The goals of the new model is to reduce food waste, help educate people in making smart nutritional choices, and confer the dignity that accompanies choice.

“We are all excited to see how this experiment quickly was embraced by the thousands of people who shop here each month,” said Community FoodBank CEO Maria Thomas.  “The new model exceeds our expectations in every way.”
