BenitoLink contacted Pet Friends to get a few helpful tips on how to help your pets tolerate Fourth of July celebrations.

We were reminded by Pet Friends Board of Directors Vice President Karen Ingalls that people often have pre-celebrations before July 4, so she suggested to prepare now for your pet’s sake.

Pet Safety:

1.       Be sure your dog or cat is wearing up to date and visible ID tags and/or microchipped (highly recommended).

2.       Take a current photo of your animal just in case you need to post flyers or have posted on the H.A.L.F. Hollister Animal Lost and Found Facebook page.

3.       If your cat or dog is afraid of loud noises, keep them secluded in a room with the TV or radio playing to help cover the fireworks noise.

4.       If your cat or dog is used to being crated, put them in the crate for the evening.

5.       If your cat or dog is usually outside, keep them in the garage.

6.       Make sure your dog cannot jump the fence or dig under it.

7.       Make sure your gate is securely latched and/or locked.

8.       If your budget allows, kennel your cat or dog at a facility that is somewhat distant from where fireworks are typically exploded.

Pet Friends is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that benefits homeless companion animals of San Benito County. Its mission is to eliminate cruelty and neglect of abandoned companion animals and to encourage a community atmosphere of education, care, and concern that will strengthen the human/animal bond.
