The Friends of the San Benito County Free Library received a grant of $20,000 from the Monterey Peninsula Foundation to support a part-time library program specialist. The Library Program Specialist will work in concert with library staff in reaching out to families and children. The program specialist will promote awareness of emergent literacy practices and library services through mobile outreach services and internal library programs.
The distribution of free children’s books will be incorporated into the emergent literacy programs and outreach efforts. The children’s book distribution component is being implemented to assist parents and their children in starting a home library and to promote a love of reading and learning within the home environment. Parents will also be provided with information on reading readiness practices and its impact.
The Friends of the Library will contribute matching funds from their Adopt-a-Book Fund and Adult Literacy Fund to purchase needed books and materials for the program. San Benito County Free Library provides the space and supplies needed.
