The National Weather Service said that the fall-like temperatures San Benito County has enjoyed in recent days will be replaced by hot weather as a strong ridge of high pressure builds back in starting this weekend.
“This will lead to much warmer temperatures with the hottest readings expected on Sunday and Monday,” according to a statement from the NWS, which has issued a heat advisory for the region. “In some cases, these will be record-breaking temperatures and the hottest so far this year.”
All of the Bay Area is subject to this advisory, including the Hollister Valley stretching down to Pinnacles National Park.
A heat advisory, which means that a period of hot temperatures is expected, is in effect from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 25 and again from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 26. Highs will mostly be in the 80s to mid-90s near the coast with 90s to lower 100s for inland areas such as San Benito County, according to the weather service. There is the “potential for hazardous conditions due to the heat for persons who are outdoors,” forecasters said. “The hot temperatures will create a situation in which heat illnesses are possible.”
Hollister is expected to reach the upper 90s on Sunday and Monday.
The weather service offered the following recommendations:
- Drink plenty of fluids
- Stay in an air-conditioned room
- Stay out of the sun
- Check on relatives and neighbors
- Never leave children or pets in vehicles, as temperatures can quickly reach very dangerous levels
