The first ever Discovery Classic Bicycle Ride, “California’s Gem,” is set for San Benito County on October 20.

This year’s event will feature a 20-mile Family Fun ride and the 50-mile Gravel Grinder ride. All rides will depart and finish at the Veterans’ Memorial Building in downtown Hollister.

Heatherly Takeuchi of Hollister is the event coordinator and has worked on other bicycle events such as the Sea Otter Classic.

“The Discovery Classic invites cyclists to enjoy some of San Benito County’s iconic landscapes,” Takeuchi said. “This is a fully supported ride.”

Registration is open and those interested in signing up can visit www.discoveryclassic.org. The Family Fun ride is $60 per person and the Gravel Grinder is $80 per person.

“The Family Fun ride is for any skill level, while the Gravel Grinder requires a hybrid bike for both road and trails,” Takeuchi said. “We encourage families to get out with their little ones for the 20-mile ride.”

Registration includes the ride, a T-shirt, post-ride meal, and rest stops stocked with water and aid stations. The race will also raise money for the veterans of San Benito County.

“From the start, we really wanted people to discover San Benito’s beautiful land,” Takeuchi said. “And there will be a vendor expo with great products San Benito has to offer.”

The 20-mile ride will start in downtown Hollister, then head south on Southside Road for family and friends to enjoy the country. The 50-mile ride will go through the foothills of Tres Pinos, out to Paicines Ranch, and through the Cienega Valley wine country.

“There is 10 miles of closed trail at Hollister Hills cyclists will get the opportunity to ride through,” Takeuchi said.

The Discovery Classic committee has been meeting once a month as they plan the event. Committee members are busy helping with registration, logistics, and getting the course race day ready.

Volunteers are still needed for the event. Those interested in volunteering can call committee member Robin Lucas at (831) 207-7656.
