The Interact Club at San Benito High School recently spent 10 days collecting approximately 15 bins worth of clothing to provide to those in need in the community. The clothing drive, held from Sept. 15-25, will donate half of the haul to the Emmaus House in Hollister, with the other half remaining on campus to help students in need.

Teacher and club advisor Becky Bonner-Leland, who organized the drive, said, “I realized in the past few years teaching at the high school, that there was a group of students whose needs could be met with the help of our school community.” She said the goal of Interact Club members “is to positively change the world around them through service. When I brought up the idea of a clothes drive to help teens in our community, they jumped on board.”

Bonner-Leland collected clothes in her classroom and other teachers around the campus had bags in their rooms to collect donated items from students.

In a message to her fellow staff members after the clothing drive, Bonner-Leland encouraged them to send students in need of clothing to her.

“We were able to obtain clothing in all sizes for both males and females on campus,” she said. “A lot of the clothes are brand new and quality brands. We also have bags and a few other accessories for students. If a school event is coming up where students do not feel that they have appropriate clothing, we also have dresses and dress shirts in varying sizes.”

Bonner-Leland expressed appreciation for SBHS students and staff “who helped in our effort to positively change the lives of students on campus and people in our community.”
