In a heartwarming celebration of Dr. Seuss Day, the Hollister Dual Language Academy opened its doors to a Free Book Fair on Friday, March 1, offering students a chance to expand their home libraries. The event, organized by the Parent Club, aimed to promote a love for reading and improve educational outcomes for the students.
Over 1,100 books were made available for students, and each child had the opportunity to explore the diverse selection and choose a book to take home. Additionally, teachers were able to select a free book for their classrooms, enhancing the school’s resources for literacy.
Nicole Shelton, President of the Parent Club, expressed her gratitude for the success of the event. “This was a great opportunity to celebrate and encourage reading on our campus. We are thankful to The Children’s Book Project for their generous support and parent volunteers who came together to make it happen. We are hoping to make this an annual tradition at HDLA,” Shelton said.
The Parent Club played a crucial role in securing the extensive collection of books for the fair. The collaboration with The Children’s Book Project and the dedication of parent volunteers ensured the success of the event. The initiative not only provided students with the joy of choosing a new book but also contributed to building a sense of community and shared enthusiasm for reading.

Research indicates that having a home library significantly impacts a child’s academic success. Children with as few as 20 books at home achieve three more years of schooling than those without any books in their households. The Free Book Fair at HDLA aimed to bridge this gap and foster a culture of reading within the school community.
One parent, who volunteered at the event, shared their appreciation for the initiative. “Organizing a free book fair for the entire school is truly a blessing. We are unaware of every child’s home situation, where a book might be considered a luxury. I enjoy volunteering for such special events,” the parent remarked.
In an effort to extend the impact of the Free Book Fair, it’s worth noting that any extra books left over from the event will be donated to the school’s library. The selection of books showcased at the fair included both English and Spanish titles, reflecting the school’s commitment to promoting bilingual literacy. This inclusive approach ensures that all students, regardless of language preference, have access to a diverse and enriching array of reading materials.
The success of the Free Book Fair at Hollister Dual Language Academy not only highlights the importance of promoting literacy but also underscores the positive impact of community-driven initiatives in supporting education. As the Parent Club looks to establish this event as an annual tradition, the hope is that it will continue to inspire a love for reading among the students at HDLA for years to come.
