With 21 local businesses hosting breweries and wineries, pouring their best wares at local shops, restaurants and watering holes, the annual Downtown Wine & Beer Stroll was held in Hollister on May 2.

About 500 people participated in this year’s event, according to the Hollister Downtown Business Association’s Teri Escamilla.

Downtown Association Executive Director Omar Rosa said it was a chance for people new to the area or who have been here before to get reacquainted with the San Benito Street area.

“I think this supports local businesses because a lot of people are coming,” Rosa said. “They’re visiting these stores, and some of them are also buying as they take part in the stroll. They also come back later to eat or dine at these places.”

Alexander Deleon, co-owner of Mad Pursuit Brewing Company, said he believes the event brings people to the area and gives them a chance to try his beers on tap, including the flagship hazy IPA, Hoppy Ending and Beer Stroll Blonde.

“We look forward to participating every year,” he said.

Hollister resident Salvador Flores said he has been to beer strolls in Napa and San Jose, but the downtown Hollister event has become a tradition.

Lupita Renteria said she received a ticket from her sister, Veronica Reyes, as a Mother’s Day present, which encouraged her to get out of the house.

“We loved the Farmhouse Cafe and having the beer from Mad Pursuit,” Renteria said. “I feel like it’s more local and homestyle, and I bought some books.”
