The Merced Sun-Star is reporting that a Hollister man suffered major injuries and a big rig was consumed by flames in a crash north of Los Banos early Wednesday.

According to the California Highway Patrol, Daniel Scott Campos, 22, was driving a 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix south on Highway 165 near Santa Fe Grade when the car crossed into the other lane and sideswiped a 2003 Freightliner driven north by Kanwer Waraich, 36, of Ceres. The location is just south of the Los Banos Waterfowl Management Area. The accident was reported at 12:35 a.m. After hitting the big rig, the Grand Prix spun out of control and was hit by a 2009 Freightliner being driven northbound by Santiago Sandoval, 56, of Modesto.

The second big rig went off the road and hit a telephone pole, then caught fire.Campos suffered major injuries and was taken by helicopter to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto. Waraich and Sandoval were not injures. According to the Sun-Star, it was not clear why Campos drove into the northbound lane and an investigation into the crash continues.
