Joe Ostenson, affectionately known as “Mr. O,” was a pillar of our music-education community for nearly half a century, influencing thousands of lives. Ostenson, the original founder of the Rancho-Maze Band, was known for treating everyone with dignity and care, finding value in all, regardless of age, background, or ability. His actions radiated the significance of structure, commitment, and camaraderie.
In honor and tribute to Joe Ostenson’s legacy, the Rancho-Maze Band created its Mr. Ostenson Award of Excellency. The recipient of this award must demonstrate the characteristics personified by the life-long educator, and must be thoroughly dedicated to the education of ALL students, encouraging others, devoting time to the program above and beyond what is required, and demonstrate leadership qualities. In addition, the student should be a stellar ambassador of the program, well organized, able to find practicality in productive criticism, and above all, encourage fellow students to come together, collaborate, and shine.
Rancho Maze Band Music Director, Mr. Adam Martinez, presented this very special award on behalf of the Ostenson Family at the Rancho Maze Band & Colorguard’s season finale concert.
Please join us in congratulating Dynah Blackmon, an 8th grade student at Marguerite Maze Middle School, and 2024 award recipient of the Mr. Ostenson Award of Excellency!
