The City of Hollister on Monday added and altered some downtown parking restrictions.

In a unanimous vote, city council members approved restricting parking in Briggs Alley between Sally and East streets near Fire Station No. 1, and extended the allowable parking time to three hours on Fifth Street between Monterey and West streets near the San Benito County Library.

“The alley has become problematic during certain times, one of them being during the motorcycle rally,” said an adviser, who did not identify himself in a statement to the council. “Parking in the alley becomes a problem.”

The city council’s blessing April 6 permits amending section 10.24 of Title 10 — “Vehicles and Traffic” — of the Hollister Municipal Code, relating to “stopping, standing or parking.”

“What had happened before was a one-hour restriction there because of the courts,” said the adviser. “That’s no longer an issue. We don’t need to restrict the time there. Jurors don’t park on that street anymore. This will basically match what’s out front here in the downtown area.”
