The Hollister Skate Park has been expanded, featuring an area with brand new skating equipment.

Located at Veterans Park on Memorial Drive, the park, originally built in 2000, recently underwent an expansion. Earlier this year, the city council approved the resurfacing of the basketball courts by the original concrete section of the park for $72,000. The council then authorized the buying of new equipment for the park for $88,000.

According to Hollister City Manager William Avera, the expansion came about amid desire voiced by skaters. “Skaters wanted something new. The old part of the park was like an old toy — they wanted something new and different,” Avera said.

After being discussed at meetings of the Parks and Recreation Commission, the suggestion was made to the Hollister City Council, which approved the expansion.

The new equipment in the park, which includes different kinds of ramps and a halfpipe, offers a brand new way to enjoy the park. And local skaters seem to not only love the new equipment, but the additional space the expansion provides.

“The expansion helps the park be less crowded, so it’s more fun to ride and easier to practice tricks,” said 15-year-old Josh Jennings, adding, “The new ramp is bigger than the old one and more fun.”

Other skaters voiced their appreciation for the expansion, stating that “it is better than the old park,” citing new pieces of equipment such as the “four step” and mini ramps.

Two skaters summed up the expansion in two words:

“It’s chill,” they agreed.
