On Friday, June 13, a dozen Hollister children and their parents participated in the annual Kids’ Fun In Hollister “School’s Out!” picnic. The event was organized by Kids’ Fun leader, Julie Engelhardt.
This is the third year Engelhardt has invited community members to this family-friendly event. She began the picnic as a way for parents and their children to get out and about and make new friends. Friday’s group consisted of children ranging from age 5 to 14. During the picnic, the children played baseball, soccer and tag.
The highlight of the day was a tour of the historic village located at the park. Caretaker Don Pidd led the group, allowing them access to the old one-room school, the neighboring Sullivan House and the jail. This gave the children and their parents, a glimpse into what San Benito County was like more than 150 years ago.
Engelhardt said she plans on holding more family-oriented events this summer that are either free or low-cost. The majority of the outings will take place in the county, with a couple of excursions out of town.
